Memorial Day
WWII Memorial Washington D.C.
Across the nation Memorial Day Weekend is usually full of food, family and friends as this weekend approaches let us remember why we take a day off work. Thousands of men and women dedicate their lives to insure the freedom and security of our citizens, without these individuals we would not enjoy the life we live today. There is no time better than this weekend to reflect on the price of freedom.
From Nature’s Reward to all men and women who have survived this country and their families:
Thank you for your service, dedication, courage and sacrifice you have made for us. We will never forget those who gave their lives for this country and will always keep their families in our hearts. For those currently serving our country we will continue to keep you in our thoughts and pray for your safety.

How Nature’s Reward Came To Be
Three generations ago Lou Huntington Sr. drove his oil truck on his route from Washington down into the Salinas Valley. After many trips delivering to a Soledad, CA farm Lou was offered a job to retire his oil truck and start farming vegetables. Working as a foreman Lou started his love for farming and invested in the company which eventually led him to buy the farm. For 25 years Lou grew primarily tomatoes, asparagus, sugar beets and beans for other shippers but as time went on a shift in crops began. The value of land in the Salinas Valley began to increase the crops grown in the area shifted to lettuce and leafy vegetables. Lou Sr. was joined by his son Lou Huntington Jr. after he graduated college and the family tradition began. 25 years after Lou Jr. joined the company and one year after Chris Huntington graduated from college and began working on the farm the decision was made to begin growing, harvesting, cooling and selling produce for themselves in order to be in control of their own destiny and the Nature’s Reward label was born.

Earth Day April 22, 2012
“I conceive that the earth belongs to a vast family of which many dead, few are living, and countless numbers are still unborn” – Nigerian Chieftain
As stewards of the land Nature’s Reward understands and appreciates the mission of Earth Day to educate the importance of environmental citizenry. In contributing to our worlds food supply it is clear to us that the number one priority is taking care of our land. Knowing that future generations are relying on this land to supply food for countless years to come it is vital we insure proper management of land and water. Planting schedules, seed selections, water applications, crop rotation and several other factors play into the daily thoughts of farmers across the nation including Nature’s Reward.
How should you celebrate Earth Day?
Plant a tree, start a recycling program in your house, time your water use, learn where your food comes from, take a hike, ride your bike, plant a garden or attend an Earth Day event near you
How are some students spending Earth Day??
Over 5,000 California high school agriculture students will spend their Earth Day at the 84th Annual California State FFA Leadership Conference. This four day conference is composed of endless leadership activities, student recognition and agriculture awareness. This opportunity for students in California leads to instrumental discussions of food, land and water. Attendees have the chance to speak with all walks of agriculture to broaden their knowledge. Nature’s Reward cannot think of a better way for the future stewards of the land to spend Earth Day.
